Every day, thousands of people leave hospital with no friends or family to help…

…and that’s where we come in!

During 2021, there was almost an 80%* rise in the number of patients who were unable to be discharged from hospital due to lack of support at home, placing additional pressure on our NHS.

Thousands of vulnerable people in Britain today are spending longer than necessary in hospital, simply because they have nobody to help them at home. Thousands more are facing the stark reality of having to return home without any support in place. Royal Voluntary Service ensures that patients return to a warm home, we deliver food and prescriptions where needed and we help them get to vital follow up medical appointments to ensure they can recover comfortably and safely at home.

A donation from you today could help us to be there for more vulnerable people as they leave hospital. And for every donation you make, we’ll treat a hard-working hospital worker to a cuppa at one of our shops or cafés.

Help someone like Jeremy

Working with the NHS, our Home from Hospital service steps in when there is no-one else, so that patients like Jeremy can recover at home with the reassurance that they aren’t being left to cope alone.

When Jeremy was told he had to have his second leg amputated, he feared he’d lose all independence and worried how he’d cope alone. With his home not being ‘wheelchair friendly’ Jeremy was trapped indoors. Thankfully he was put in touch with Royal Voluntary Service, and we were able to support him.

“Knowing that someone is there when you need them, should things get a difficult, is such a nice feeling. It gives you a little bit of calm and reassurance when you start to worry about how you’ll manage to do things. It would have been really easy for me to become a total recluse, but Royal Voluntary Service have stopped that happening to me.” Jeremy, Home from Hospital client in Medway, Kent.

A donation from you today could help us to be there for more vulnerable people like Jeremy in their hour of need.

An extra ‘thanks’ to NHS workers

Every day we are working side by side with the NHS to improve the lives of those we help. A donation from you today will help us to reach more people who need us, in hospitals and communities right throughout Britain. And in celebration of our wonderful partnership with the NHS, for every donation you make, we’ll buy a cuppa for a hospital worker at one of our shops or cafés as an extra ‘thanks’ for all of their hard work.

We must act now… support our communities and provide a lifeline to those who need our help.

We provide vital support to people in hospitals and in the community, and a gift from you today could help us to:

  • Support our on-the-ground teams to deliver welfare checks
  • Deliver essential groceries and prescriptions
  • Arrange transport trips to vital medical appointments
  • Help with the hospital discharge process
  • Support recovery at home after a stay in hospital
  • Provide companionship for isolated people
  • Provide community activities to boost social connections, whether in person or online at our Virtual Village Hall.

How your donation could help

£10 could help a vulnerable person safely attend a vital medical appointment through our patient transport service.

£30 could help support someone returning from hospital alone with ongoing visits, food shopping and prescription collections.

£70 could cover the cost of recruiting, training, and placing a volunteer in an NHS hospital or local community. This will help us to be there for more vulnerable people when it matters most.
