Your time makes a real difference

Around a third of the UK workforce are offered paid time to volunteer by their employer, usually during work hours. This allowance can vary from a few hours to several days each year.

It's a valuable opportunity to begin or expand your volunteering journey, grow your skills and confidence, connect with colleagues and support the causes you care about.

Whether you have a few hours to give through your workplace, or can make a more regular commitment, your time, skills and energy is incredibly value, helping us improve life for more people across Britain.Your time makes a real difference

Employee volunteering with Royal Voluntary Service

From drawing on your professional expertise or trying something completely unrelated to your day job, we have some great employee volunteering opportunities to suit different interests, skills and availability.

  • Volunteer in hospitals: do a ward round with one of our trolleys, providing a welcome pick me up to those unable to make it to the hospital shop.

  • Calls with Care: make regular telephone calls to those who feel isolated and lonely.

  • Social clubs & activities: support a Royal Voluntary Service lunch or social club near you, or work alongside your colleagues to run your own activity.

  • Fundraising: create your own, or take up one of our ready-made, fundraisers. Every pound raised helps volunteers support more people across the country.

  • Bespoke opportunities: we can work with your employer to develop tailored volunteering packages for individuals or teams as part of a corporate partnership.

What are the benefits of workplace volunteering?

As well as positively impacting those you help, volunteering through work can be a rewarding and effective way to connect with your colleagues and unite around a shared purpose. It’s a chance to gain new perspectives, develop your skills and support your wellbeing. Research also links volunteering with increased confidence, productivity and even higher earnings.

Speak to your employer to find out about your volunteering allowance. If they don’t have a programme, why not start a conversation about introducing one?

If you do have volunteering days, make the most of them and get your time booked in.

Employee volunteering in action

We work in partnership with Centrica on an employee volunteering programme. One afternoon a week, colleagues from British Gas volunteer to take our hospital trolley round the wards of Macclesfield District General Hospital. It’s a vital service for patients, especially for those who have few, or even no, visitors or are unable to get to the shop, with volunteers offering a friendly face and a chance to buy healthy snacks and essentials.

The collaboration has proved really rewarding for British Gas, its colleagues, Royal Voluntary Service and those we support.  "Volunteering has developed my confidence and I’ve become a lot more comfortable with talking to new people. It’s also given my mental wellbeing a boost"

This is just one of the ways you and your employer could support Royal Voluntary Service.
