Penny's story

Roysl Voluntary Service hospital cafe volunteer Penny
When my children were off at school I found myself with time in the day, and a friend suggested the outpatients café at Addenbroke's Hospital was looking for volunteers. When I popped in the manager was lovely and I was very impressed with the atmosphere. So I've been there every Tuesday for the last 30 years.

I have served behind the counter, helped in the kitchen and was finally promoted to chief washer-up. This gives me lots of opportunities while clearing tables to chat to patients who are often anxious and in need of cheering up.

I love working with different people. In the last year I've had a young person with special needs alongside me, and I've helped her learn the ropes. I've even taught her to read the menus and tie a knot. I really miss her when she's not there.
