Avis's story

Activity club volunteer Avis
It all started when my friend Joan asked me to help her with the International Dance Club. Now I provide the music and call some of the dances. I have made really good friends and feel valued, thanks to volunteering.

I've been a volunteer with Royal Voluntary Service for six and a half years now. It offers such a variety of opportunities and experiences, life is never mundane. I've been a community companion, and since March I've been a Volunteer Co-ordinator for the Cornhill Community Companions. We provide volunteers to visit older people in Oxfordshire who are lonely, socially isolated or in need of practical help.

Sometimes you can do the smallest of things but it can have a big impact. I went to pick up a lady the other day to take her shopping. "Would you mind before we go just getting my book, it's slipped down the side of the bed and I can't reach it?" she asked. She was overjoyed when I fished it out. Little things can mean a lot.
