On ward services
Royal Voluntary Service volunteers are at the very heart of the NHS, providing a range of services and support in hospitals to free up NHS staff time for patient care. They work on hospital wards to make a stay in hospital a little easier for older people, to help them return home stronger and more quickly and to reduce the chances of re-admission.
Through our Supporting Your Recovery service, trained volunteers support patient recovery and help build confidence, resilience and muscle strength for when they return home. They do this by providing physical exercise (chair-based resistance exercise classes), mental exercise (including Cognitive Stimulation Therapy for people with mild to moderate dementia) and practical advice on nutrition and hydration. On ward volunteers also provide companionship outside visiting hours to those without family and friends close by, for instance by chatting, reading and playing games.
