Hospital shops and cafés
We are the biggest retailer in hospitals in England, Scotland and Wales and has been an integral part of the NHS since its inception in 1948.
Today Royal Voluntary Service boasts over440 cafés, shops and trolley services. In many cases, profits raised through sales in our shops and cafés is gifted back to hospitals to improve services and equipment for older people in that hospital and community.
Not only do our shops provide convenient and good value refreshment for visitors and top up shopping for staff but also our cafés provide a welcoming place to take a break.
Royal Voluntary Service is taking a lead on the NHS workforce health and wellbeing drive by transforming our hospital cafés, shops and trolley services into hubs for healthy eating.
The new framework for healthcare buildings has been introduced by the Scottish Government and we are planning to roll it out our entire UK retail estate.
Staff, patients and visitors will all benefit from this healthy living initiative which will see the phased introduction of exciting new menus and healthy, nutritious options at fair prices across our hospital locations. New-look Royal Voluntary Service cafés will offer a wide range of healthy fruit and nut snacks, soups and broths, freshly prepared salads, sandwiches, stews and seasonal dishes using local produce, and allergy, intolerance and health condition-friendly items. Space for unhealthy items like crisps, confectionery and sugary drinks will be dramatically reduced.
