People’s Health Trust has awarded grants to Royal Voluntary Service totalling over £3m since 2011. This generous funding has supported local services across England, Scotland and Wales, making a positive difference to the lives of thousands of older people.

People's Health Trust is an independent charity investing in local neighbourhoods to help create a society without health inequalities. It works closely with each of the regional and country lotteries raising money through The Health Lottery, and distributes grants.

Local People Projects

Since 2015 Royal Voluntary Service has been working on six Local People Projects, funded through People’s Health Trust’s Local People Programme. The Local People programme is a People’s Health Trust initiative which involves supporting residents to develop a shared vision for their community and take action on the issues that matter most to local people.

We are working in six neighbourhoods across England and Scotland covering specific postcode areas in:

  • Peterborough
  • Lincolnshire
  • Norfolk
  • Staffordshire
  • Telford & Wrekin
  • Angus County.

Royal Voluntary Service supports older people in each area to identify and address the issues that affect them – whether this is transport, communication, how the local area looks and feels, or having nowhere to enjoy their hobbies. Residents have been able to engage with the project and have their voices heard through events, pop up stands in the high street, coffee mornings and more.

Each area has its own Steering Group, made up of local residents, who decide the direction of the project. They also have control of a pot of money, which they can use to trial and support projects and activities that address the issues the communities have identified as a priority for older people. Examples of projects supported by the Steering Groups include a transport scheme so that older people can get out and about, a befriending scheme for older people with dementia and a film club for tenants within a sheltered housing complex.

"The Local People programme is a unique opportunity which encourages communities to come together and take the lead in the design and delivery of home-grown ideas. This programme relies on the wisdom, experiences and skills of local people and supports them to make changes they want for their community."
