Why does Royal Voluntary Service run raffles and prize draws?

Raffles and prize draws are one of the most effective ways we can raise money. Lots of people are attracted by the opportunity to buy a raffle ticket or enter our prize draws to potentially win a big prize. It’s also a great way for us to remind our supporters about the great work that Royal Voluntary Service does to make life better for older people in Britain.

What’s more, by giving away prizes to our winners, we have the opportunity to say a heartfelt 'thank you' to the generous supporters who help to make our work possible every day.

In 2015 we raised over £1.2m through our raffles and prize draws.

Do you really give out these prizes?

Yes, we really do. Our prizes are guaranteed and someone will always win them – and it could be you! Here is a list of people who have won prizes recently.

How can you afford to give such big prizes away?

The prize money is actually just a small percentage of the profits of the draws. For instance, in In 2015 we raised over £1.2m through our raffles and prize draws and we gave out over £65,000 in prizes (5.4%).

Aren’t you wasting money by sending me these prize draws and raffles?

We keep very tight control of all our costs, such as design and printing, so that every package we send out is very low cost. So you can feel confident that your donations are used with very great care to help the people who need us the most.

Where is the money I give to you actually going?

Royal Voluntary Service is a charity dedicated to helping older people in Britain – you can read some of the real life stories about some of the people whose lives are so much better because of your kind support. Why have I been sent this prize draw or raffle?

If you have previously supported us...

...we will send you more opportunities to take part throughout the year. Many people who support Royal Voluntary Service through our raffles and draws like to do so ‘little and often’. On average, our supporters take part in about three draws a year, but lots of people like to play more often than this. We send out our draws regularly, so that the generous people who kindly want to support us in this way have the opportunity to do so throughout the year. Of course, we know that not everybody will be able to reply every time... and because our draws are so cost effective, there is very little wastage on the occasions when people are not able to respond. ...we occasionally invite people who are not currently Royal Voluntary Service supporters to take part in the fun of our raffles and prize draws. Is my personal information safe?

What’s the difference between a raffle and a prize draw?

In a raffle, you have to pay to enter. You may buy raffle tickets yourself or sell them to friends or family, tickets can only be bought or sold by people aged over 16. Every £1 ticket that is sold goes into the draw and the winners are drawn at random. Raffles are licensed in Great Britain by the Gambling Commission. Royal Voluntary Service holds Gambling Commission Operating Licences 000-004909-N-302328-014 (non-remote) and 000-004909-R-323102-005 (remote).

In a prize draw, you do not have to pay to enter – though most people choose to make a donation when they take part. Everyone who enters goes into our draw, whether or not they make a donation. There are no tickets but you may be allocated a unique number (or numbers) that will be entered into the draw for you. The winner is drawn at random on the draw date from all eligible entries received. Prize draws are not licensed like raffles but must be run in accordance with rules set down by the Advertising Standards Authority in their CAP Code (Committee of Advertising Practice). Royal Voluntary Service checks all our prize draws against this Code.

Do I have to make a donation to enter your prize draw?

No. But we hope you will! We run our prize draws to raise funds for our charitable work to make life better for older people throughout Britain. Most people do include a donation when they reply, and as an extra ‘thank you’ for this support, we offer anyone who makes a donation the opportunity to take the cash equivalent of the main prizes in the draw. That’s £18,000 for the grand prize, £4,000 for the first prize and £1,500 for the second prize.

What are my chances of winning?

Your chances of winning depend on how many other people take part because every entry has an equal chance. Of course the more you enter the better your chances! We also offer extra prizes that are only open to people who reply quickly, so you have a better chance of winning a prize if you reply as soon as you can.

What if I don’t want to take part in Royal Voluntary Service prize draws and raffles?

That’s absolutely fine. We wouldn’t like you to be unhappy in any way and should you wish to stop receiving our prize draws and/or raffles, please just let us know by calling our supporter care team on 0800 731 9197. We have a variety of different communications including newsletters and appeals, and you can choose to receive as few or as many of these as you wish.

When do the draws take place?

Raffles

The draw date will be stated on the raffle ticket. Usually we conduct one raffle a year which is drawn in December although in 2016 and 2017 we also held a Summer raffle.

Prize draws

The next annual draw for the main prizes will take place on 23 March 2018. You may enter as many times as you like throughout the year and each entry gives you an additional and separate chance of winning.

Fast reply & bonus prizes

We like to give you lots of additional opportunities to win, so there are regular extra prizes for people who reply quickly. We time these draws so everyone has a fair chance to receive the prize draw mailing, reply within seven days and get their entry back to us by 2nd class post.

How will I know if I have won a prize?

We contact all winners as soon as we can after the draw has taken place and always within 28 days of the draw. For smaller prizes, we will simply include your prize with your letter of notification. If you have won a main prize we will contact you to arrange delivery details or to invite you to choose between alternative prize options if relevant. We will always confirm your win in writing. The names and towns of main prize winners will be listed on our website 28 days after the draw or you can request this information by sending a stamped addressed envelope to:

I’m worried a prize draw I have received may be a scam, how can I tell?

Please rest assured that Royal Voluntary Service prize draws are not scams. The prizes on offer are genuine and our prize winners are real people.

However, we are aware that there are some dishonest companies who try to copy legitimate prize draws in order to fraudulently con money off unsuspecting people. If you are concerned about a prize draw that you or someone close to you has received, this is our advice.

  1. You should never be asked to pay to enter a prize draw. A charity prize draw like those run by Royal Voluntary Service may invite you to make a donation but this will always be voluntary. Never reply to a prize draw which tells you must pay “tax” “delivery charges” “admin fees” or anything similar in order to receive your prize.
  2. No legitimate company will ever ask you to keep your prize a secret.
  3. Take your time to read and think about what you are being offered - does it sound realistic? For example – does it say you may win a prize by entering a draw (realistic) or does it say you have definitely won a prize in a draw you have not entered (impossible).
  4. Be cautious of companies which do not provide contact details such as a phone number or email address, or where there is only a PO Box address. If you’re in any doubt, phone or email first and don’t enter the draw until you have a response you are happy with.
  5. Be cautious of ringing a premium rate number (beginning with 090) - the cost of your phone call could be much greater than the value of any prize you may have won.
  6. Any fundraising communication from a charity, including a prize draw, should include the Registered Charity Number. If the charity is a member of the Fundraising Regulator (as Royal Voluntary Service is) this gives you additional reassurance that the charity will adhere to the Fundraising Promise

A scam is a crime. If you have been targeted, please report it to the police or to your nearest trading standards office.
