Kathleen’s legacy

Royal Voluntary Service volunteers Ann and Doreen
Smallthorne Darby and Joan Club in Staffordshire, has been giving local older people a friendly place to get together for the past 50 years. Today, the Social Club's members meet to enjoy anything from a game of bingo, a book sale or a club trip. It also gives many of the members a reason to leave the house.

Club leader Ann is one of 11 committed volunteers who runs the club. She believes that it’s never been more important to have clubs like Smallthorne "With so many places closing, people have nowhere to go", she explains.

Her sister, Doreen, who started volunteering after a club day trip 20 years ago, agrees: "Some wouldn’t go out if we didn’t have the club. It’s the only place they go to meet people."

Kathleen Brindley was a regular attender at a Lunch Club in Staffordshire. The club meant a lot to Kathleen and she knew how attending the club was often the only source of company for many of her friends. So Kathleen pledged a gift of £500 in her Will for clubs to benefit from her generosity.

When someone decides to leave a gift in their Will, they’re helping to create a future where older people can remain independent in their home and in the community. It’s for this reason that Kathleen left a gift in her Will to enable older people to live the life that they want.

Thanks to Kathleen’s legacy, 100 members of the Smallthorne Darby and Joan Club will be enjoying a rare cooked meal together.

"I had a 30 year career in catering and I’m used to being around people. I need to come to the club because it gives me the company and conversation that I was used to when I worked. A lot of people that come to the club live on their own and many of us have become close friends."

78 year old Shirley has been attending the club for a few years
Without people like Kathleen, leaving a gift in their Will, older people would not have access to Social Clubs like Smallthorne. You too, can ensure that people get the support they need in their homes, in the community and during a stay in hospital. Along with Kathleen, people who choose to support in this way, will be remembered for their generosity and for changing lives.
