Sir James Knott Trust

Sir James Knott Trust supports Royal Voluntary Service
Operating in some of the most rural areas in Northumberland, social centres offer companionship and support to older people who might otherwise feel quite isolated.  Every week our centres in Rothbury, Wooler, Alnwick, Bedlington and Morpeth bring older people together with their friends and provide a range of enjoyable activities, crafts and games. Transport to the centres is provided by our volunteer drivers and older people can enjoy spending time together in a safe and relaxing environment. For many it has become an important part of their weekly routine and helps to combat feelings of isolation and loneliness which can be so detrimental to health.

Evelyn lives in a small village which is more than ten miles away from the nearest town. She has poor eyesight and is sometimes confused. Even if public transport was available, it wouldn’t be suitable for Evelyn. Instead one of our volunteer drivers comes to pick her up and helps to secure her home.

"I enjoy coming along and meeting up with the friends I have made."

Evelyn, who visits our social centres
Evelyn’s family appreciate that she can go somewhere during the week to meet with her friends and enjoy a warm meal. None of this would be possible without the dedication of our volunteers and kind grants from organisations like the Sir James Knott Trust.

The Sir James Knott Trust is an independent grant making charitable trust and has a long history of supporting community projects in Tyne & Wear, Northumberland and County Durham. Its aim is to help improve the conditions of people living and working in North East England.

"The Sir James Knott Trust was delighted to be able to assist Royal Voluntary Service with its invaluable work supporting and helping to reduce isolation for the elderly folk of rural Northumberland."
